Arrived at 10am in Thakek (after the lagoon), we have only 30min to get our back, give the bike back and go up to the terminal to get the bus to Pakse. I arrive there 3 min before departure! We sit in children plastic chairs in the middle of the bus, we are thirsty and hungry! And the bus suspension brakes 2 hours later: the reparation will take 2 further hours. We arrived exhausted in Pakse by 8pm!
The landscape gets drier and drier in each km to the south. In Pakse, we take one day off to rest. And then, we start our third and last loop with motorbike in Laos: let’s go to the Boloven plateau and discover impressive waterfalls: we stop and go swimming in some, or just admire the tallest waterfalls in the country (Tad Fane fell for 120m). We trek for ca. 30min through the jungle to arrive on the top of the drop: breathtaking!
We spent one day to explore the Wat Phou in Champasak, a temple much renovated by the Khmer, whose importance declined after Angkor became the capital of the empire. A nice prelude to the Cambodian highlight! The Frangipaniers around the stairs are splendid!
We finish our journey in Laos with the relaxing “4000 Islands”, archipelagos in the Mekong close to the Cambodian border. It is very nice to stay a few days in Don Det just doing almost nothing, or ride a bike or a boat until impressive falls of the Mekong!
