West coast

It’s very nice to leave Tulear for the beaches of Anakao or Ifathy. A little sea air always feels good! Anakao is a 1-hour speed boat south of Tulear. It is a fishing village where fish are still abundant but overfishing, while the rest is imported by canoe.

The track in the hinterland is impractical (sand) and depends on unreliable barges. Behind the village is only cactus. Consequences: no electricity, no fresh water (brackish water), and everything is very expensive. The lagoon is formed of two, even three coral reefs. So no sharks! The 2nd barrier behind Nosy Ve offers great diving, and a world class wave for surfers, according to Julien, a guy from La Reunion who surfed a lot in the World!
